Swiss Islamophobia

Swiss voters approved a ban on the construction of mosque minarets. The ban was sponsored by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party or SVP, and unfortunately was approved by 58 percent of the voters today.

“The Federal Council respects this decision,” the government said in a statement.

Earlier, Swiss Islamophobes displayed posters showing a black-veiled figure standing next to a Swiss flag covered in missile-like minarets were outlawed in several cities on the grounds that they were discriminatory. Campaigners for the ban argued that minarets are symbols of religious and political power that will pave the way for the eventual introduction of Sharia law in Switzerland. About 5 percent of the country’s 7.8 million people are Muslim.

I’ve decided to ban Swiss chocolate from my diet. I think that you should too!

  1. We don't want to overreact here. Banning Swiss chocolate might be a little extreme.
Beyond the poster, which, i agree is biased "propaganda", i don't see how you could so clearly condemn this vote.
Keeping in mind there are 150 mosques in Switzerland, i find it funny we should consider it a right to have as many mosques and minarets as we deem required, practice Islam freely in historically Christian (mostly secular) countries when in every constitutionnally muslim countri, the very right to choosing your outfit (for women) is illegal.
I do agree underlying reasons imply a certain fear of Islam, but overall if this is Islamophobia, then most muslim countries throughout the world suffer from everythingelse-o-phobia.
Even before Christians are allowed to build a church in Mecca, or even any tiny village in Saudi or Iran, the day non muslim women will have the right to choose their clothes on these lands, then, maybe, we might have a semblant of legitimacy to demand western countries let us build minarets...
